Real-time Fact-checking in Mozambique

Workshop
Curated by the Lift community
Thu, Feb. 05 2015 - 10:30 to 12:00
Room 20 (Floor 3)

Workshop Description : Thus far, most discussions about citizen journalism have been from a developed-world perspective, but the pioneering newspaper @Verdade has been working on systems for verifying citizen reports since 2011.

This workshop will present ways to verify citizen media reports and will present the open-source Citizen Desk software for verification, which it has developed with the Czech NGO Sourcefabric. The workshop will also draw on information from the Verification Handbook (http://verificationhandbook.com/), widely considered to be the leading publication on the topic of citizen journalism verification. Participants will also use SMS and social networks to report, and verifiers will use the Citizen Desk software to process the reports.

Interactivity : The workshop will be in the form of a competition with several parts. One group of participants will serve as citizen reporters, one as fact checkers. The citizen reporter group will have a hidden person who is intentionally spreading false information, and it is the job of the verifiers to debunk the false information and to identify its source.
